Risk Management
The transportation of bulk petroleum products incurs inherent
risks above and beyond general product transportation. To meet
that increased risk, Penn Tank Lines, Inc. will pursue an
aggressive policy and program of loss prevention. Safety
First! is a senior management
commitment which will drive how the company does business.
Programs to ensure the company's focus on loss prevention will
include the following:
- Comprehensive minimum hiring standards which exceed
Department of Transportation requirements, new hire
screening and testing for drivers, including motor
vehicle record searches, ten year previous employment
review, medical and drug testing, and driver skill
testing and assessment.
- New hire training and testing for drivers.
- A corrective action program to assure that causes of loss
are addressed and to reduce the repetition of preventable
losses.
- On-going, thorough hazardous materials training for all
employees involved at any level in the transportation of
our customer's products.
- The selection of a strong insurance broker and administer
to assist the company in optimizing its overall loss
prevention strategy.
- Effective use of outside loss prevention specialists, as
specifically needed, to help monitor, evaluate, and
improve the company's loss prevention performance.
- Effective use of three company safety supervisors to
provide a continual reinforcement of safe practices at
all levels in the company.
- Carefully designed recognition programs throughout the
company which reward individual contributions and
commitment to working safely.
